ഉല്‍‍പത്തി പുസ്തകം അദ്ധ്യായം 1
ദൈവം പ്രപഞ്ചത്തെ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നു!
1 : ആദിയില്‍ ദൈവം ആകാശവും ഭൂമിയും സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു.
2 : ഭൂമി രൂപരഹിതവും ശൂന്യവുമായിരുന്നു. ആഴത്തിനുമുകളില്‍ അന്ധകാരം വ്യാപിച്ചിരുന്നു. ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ചൈതന്യം വെള്ളത്തിനുമീതെ ചലിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.
3 : ദൈവം അരുളിച്ചെയ്തു: വെളിച്ചം ഉണ്ടാകട്ടെ. വെളിച്ചം ഉണ്ടായി.
4 : വെളിച്ചം നല്ലതെന്നു ദൈവം കണ്ടു. അവിടുന്നു വെളിച്ചത്തെ ഇരുളില്‍നിന്നു വേര്‍തിരിച്ചു.
5 : വെളിച്ചത്തിനു പകലെന്നും ഇരുളിനു രാത്രിയെന്നും പേരിട്ടു. സന്ധ്യയായി, പ്രഭാതമായി – ഒന്നാംദിവസം.
6 : ദൈവം വീണ്ടും അരുളിച്ചെയ്തു: ജല മധ്യത്തില്‍ ഒരു വിതാനം ഉണ്ടാകട്ടെ, അതു ജലത്തെ രണ്ടായി തിരിക്കട്ടെ.
7 : ദൈവം വിതാനമുണ്ടാക്കുകയും അതിനു താഴെയുള്ള ജലത്തെ മുകളിലുള്ള ജലത്തില്‍നിന്നു വേര്‍തിരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. അപ്രകാരം സംഭവിച്ചു.
8 : വിതാനത്തിന് അവിടുന്ന് ആകാശമെന്നു പേരിട്ടു. സന്ധ്യയായി, പ്രഭാതമായി – രണ്ടാം ദിവസം.
9 : ദൈവം വീണ്ടും അരുളിച്ചെയ്തു: ആകാശത്തിനു കീഴിലുള്ള വെള്ളമെല്ലാം ഒരിടത്ത് ഒരുമിച്ചുകൂടട്ടെ, കര പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടട്ടെ. അങ്ങനെ സംഭവിച്ചു.
10 : കരയ്ക്കു ഭൂമിയെന്നും ഒരുമിച്ചുകൂടിയ ജലത്തിനു കടലെന്നും ദൈവം പേരിട്ടു. അതു നല്ലതെന്ന് അവിടുന്നു കണ്ടു.
11 : ദൈവം അരുളിച്ചെയ്തു: ഭൂമി എല്ലാത്തരം ഹരിതസസ്യങ്ങളും ധാന്യച്ചെടികളും വിത്തുള്‍ക്കൊള്ളുന്ന ഫലങ്ങള്‍ കായ്ക്കുന്ന വൃക്ഷങ്ങളും മുളപ്പിക്കട്ടെ. അങ്ങനെ സംഭവിച്ചു.
12 : ഭൂമി എല്ലാത്തരം ഹരിത സസ്യങ്ങളും ധാന്യച്ചെടികളും വിത്തുള്ള ഫലങ്ങളോടുകൂടിയ വൃക്ഷങ്ങളും മുളപ്പിച്ചു. അവനല്ലതെന്നു ദൈവം കണ്ടു.
13 : സന്ധ്യയായി, പ്രഭാതമായി – മൂന്നാം ദിവസം.
14 : ദൈവം വീണ്ടും അരുളിച്ചെയ്തു: രാവും പകലും വേര്‍തിരിക്കാന്‍ ആകാശവിതാനത്തില്‍ പ്രകാശങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടാകട്ടെ. അവ ഋതുക്കളും ദിനങ്ങളും വര്‍ഷങ്ങളും കുറിക്കുന്ന അടയാളങ്ങളായിരിക്കട്ടെ.
15 : ഭൂമിയില്‍ പ്രകാശം ചൊരിയാന്‍വേണ്ടി അവ ആകാശവിതാനത്തില്‍ ദീപങ്ങളായി നില്‍ക്കട്ടെ. അങ്ങനെ സംഭവിച്ചു.
16 : ദൈവം രണ്ടു മഹാദീപങ്ങള്‍ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു. പകലിനെ നയിക്കാന്‍ വലുത്, രാത്രിയെ നയിക്കാന്‍ ചെറുത്.
17 : നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളെയും അവിടുന്നു സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു.
18 : ഭൂമിയില്‍പ്രകാശം ചൊരിയാനും രാവിനെയും പകലിനെയും നിയന്ത്രിക്കാനും വെളിച്ചത്തെ ഇരുളില്‍നിന്നുവേര്‍തിരിക്കാനും ദൈവം അവയെ ആകാശവിതാനത്തില്‍ സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. അതു നല്ലതെന്നു ദൈവം കണ്ടു.
19 : സന്ധ്യയായി, പ്രഭാതമായി – നാലാം ദിവസം.
20 : ദൈവം വീണ്ടും അരുളിച്ചെയ്തു: വെള്ളം ജീവജാലങ്ങളെ പുറപ്പെടുവിക്കട്ടെ; പക്ഷികള്‍ ഭൂമിക്കു മീതേ ആകാശവിതാനത്തില്‍ പറക്കട്ടെ.
21 : അങ്ങനെ ദൈവം ഭീമാകാരങ്ങളായ ജലജന്തുക്കളെയും കടലില്‍ പറ്റംചേര്‍ന്നു ചരിക്കുന്ന സകലവിധ ജീവി കളെയും എല്ലാത്തരം പക്ഷികളെയും സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു. അവ നല്ലതെന്ന് അവിടുന്നു കണ്ടു.
22 : ദൈവം അവയെ ഇങ്ങനെ അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചു: സമൃദ്ധമായി പെരുകി കടലില്‍ നിറയുവിന്‍; പക്ഷികള്‍ ഭൂമിയില്‍ പെരുകട്ടെ.
23 : സന്ധ്യയായി, പ്രഭാതമായി – അഞ്ചാം ദിവസം.
24 : ദൈവം വീണ്ടും അരുളിച്ചെയ്തു : ഭൂമി എല്ലാത്തരം ജീവ ജാലങ്ങളെയും – കന്നുകാലികള്‍, ഇഴജന്തുക്കള്‍, കാട്ടുമൃഗങ്ങള്‍ എന്നിവയെ – പുറപ്പെടുവിക്കട്ടെ. അങ്ങനെ സംഭവിച്ചു.
25 : അങ്ങനെ ദൈവം എല്ലാ ഇനം കാട്ടുമൃഗങ്ങളെയും കന്നുകാലികളെയും ഇഴജന്തുക്കളെയും സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു. അവനല്ലതെന്ന് അവിടുന്നു കണ്ടു.
26 : ദൈവം വീണ്ടും അരുളിച്ചെയ്തു: നമുക്കു നമ്മുടെ ഛായയിലും സാദൃശ്യത്തിലുംമനുഷ്യനെ സൃഷ്ടിക്കാം. അവര്‍ക്കു കടലിലെ മത്‌സ്യങ്ങളുടെയും ആകാശത്തിലെ പറവകളുടെയും നാല്‍ക്കാലികളുടെയും ഭൂമി മുഴുവന്റെയും ഭൂമിയില്‍ ഇഴയുന്ന സര്‍വ ജീവികളുടെയും മേല്‍ ആധിപത്യം ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കട്ടെ.
27 : അങ്ങനെ ദൈവം തന്റെ ഛായയില്‍ മനുഷ്യനെ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു. ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ഛായയില്‍ അവിടുന്ന് അവനെ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു; സ്ത്രീയും പുരുഷനുമായി അവരെ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു.
28 : ദൈവം അവരെ ഇങ്ങനെ അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചു: സന്താനപുഷ്ടിയുള്ളവരായി പെരുകുവിന്‍. ഭൂമിയില്‍ നിറഞ്ഞ് അതിനെ കീഴടക്കുവിന്‍. കടലിലെ മത്‌സ്യങ്ങളുടെയും ആകാശത്തിലെ പറവകളുടെയും ഭൂമിയില്‍ ചരിക്കുന്ന സകല ജീവികളുടെയും മേല്‍ നിങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ആധിപത്യം ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കട്ടെ.
29 : ദൈവം അരുളിച്ചെയ്തു : ഭൂമുഖത്തുള്ള ധാന്യം വിളയുന്ന എല്ലാ ചെടികളും വിത്തുള്‍ക്കൊള്ളുന്ന പഴങ്ങള്‍ കായ്ക്കുന്ന എല്ലാ വൃക്ഷങ്ങളും ഞാന്‍ നിങ്ങള്‍ക്കു ഭക്ഷണത്തിനായി തരുന്നു,
30 : ഭൂമിയിലെ മൃഗങ്ങള്‍ക്കും ആകാശത്തിലെ എല്ലാ പറവകള്‍ക്കും ഇഴജന്തുക്കള്‍ക്കും – ജീവശ്വാസമുള്ള സകലതിനും – ആഹാരമായി ഹരിതസസ്യങ്ങള്‍ ഞാന്‍ നല്‍കിയിരിക്കുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ സംഭവിച്ചു.
31 : താന്‍ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചതെല്ലാം വളരെ നന്നായിരിക്കുന്നുവെന്നു ദൈവം കണ്ടു. സന്ധ്യയായി, പ്രഭാതമായി – ആറാം ദിവസം.
അദ്ധ്യായം 2
1 : അങ്ങനെ ആകാശവും ഭൂമിയും അവയിലുള്ള സമസ്തവും പൂര്‍ണമായി.
2 : ദൈവം തന്റെ ജോലി ഏഴാം ദിവസം പൂര്‍ത്തിയാക്കി. താന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രവൃത്തിയില്‍നിന്നു വിരമിച്ച്, ഏഴാം ദിവസം അവിടുന്നു വിശ്രമിച്ചു.
3 : സൃഷ്ടികര്‍മം പൂര്‍ത്തിയാക്കി, തന്റെ പ്രവൃത്തികളില്‍നിന്നു വിരമിച്ച് വിശ്രമിച്ച ഏഴാം ദിവസത്തെ ദൈവം അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചു വിശുദ്ധമാക്കി.
4 : ഇതാണ് ആകാശത്തിന്റെയും ഭൂമിയുടെയും ഉത്പത്തിചരിത്രം.
ഏദന്‍ തോട്ടം
5 : ദൈവമായ കര്‍ത്താവ് ആകാശവും ഭൂമിയും സൃഷ്ടിച്ച നാളില്‍ ഭൂമിയില്‍ പുല്ലോ ചെടിയോ മുളച്ചിരുന്നില്ല. കാരണം, അവിടുന്നു ഭൂമിയില്‍ മഴ പെയ്യിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല. കൃഷിചെയ്യാന്‍മനുഷ്യനുണ്ടായിരുന്നുമില്ല.
6 : എന്നാല്‍, ഭൂമിയില്‍നിന്ന് ഒരു മൂടല്‍മഞ്ഞ് ഉയര്‍ന്നു ഭൂതലമെല്ലാം നനച്ചു.
7 : ദൈവമായ കര്‍ത്താവ് ഭൂമിയിലെ പൂഴികൊണ്ടു മനുഷ്യനെ രൂപപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ജീവന്റെ ശ്വാസം അവന്റെ നാസാരന്ധ്രങ്ങളിലേക്കു നിശ്വസിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. അങ്ങനെ മനുഷ്യന്‍ ജീവനുള്ളവനായിത്തീര്‍ന്നു.
8 : അവിടുന്നു കിഴക്ക് ഏദനില്‍ ഒരു തോട്ടം ഉണ്ടാക്കി, താന്‍ രൂപംകൊടുത്ത മനുഷ്യനെ അവിടെ താമസിപ്പിച്ചു.
9 : കാഴ്ചയ്ക്കു കൗതുകവും ഭക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ സ്വാദുമുള്ള പഴങ്ങള്‍ കായ്ക്കുന്ന എല്ലാത്തരം വൃക്ഷങ്ങളും അവിടുന്നു മണ്ണില്‍നിന്നു പുറപ്പെടുവിച്ചു. ജീവന്റെ വൃക്ഷവും നന്‍മതിന്‍മകളെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള അറിവിന്റെ വൃക്ഷവും തോട്ടത്തിന്റെ നടുവില്‍ അവിടുന്നു വളര്‍ത്തി.
10 : തോട്ടം നനയ്ക്കാന്‍ ഏദനില്‍നിന്ന് ഒരു നദി പുറപ്പെട്ടു. അവിടെവച്ച് അതു നാലു കൈവഴികളായിപ്പിരിഞ്ഞു.
11 : ഒന്നാമത്തേതിന്റെ പേര് പിഷോണ്‍. അത് സ്വര്‍ണത്തിന്റെ നാടായ ഹവിലാ മുഴുവന്‍ ചുറ്റിയൊഴുകുന്നു.
12 : ആ നാട്ടിലെ സ്വര്‍ണം മേല്‍ത്തരമാണ്. അവിടെ സുഗന്ധദ്രവ്യങ്ങളും പവിഴക്കല്ലുകളുമുണ്ട്.
13 : രണ്ടാമത്തെനദിയുടെ പേര് ഗിഹോണ്‍. അതു കുഷ് എന്ന നാടിനെ ചുറ്റിയൊഴുകുന്നു.
14 : മൂന്നാമത്തെനദിയുടെ പേര് ടൈഗ്രീസ്. അത് അസീറിയയുടെ കിഴക്കുഭാഗത്തുകൂടി ഒഴുകുന്നു. നാലാമത്തെനദിയൂഫ്രെട്ടീസ്.
15 : ഏദന്‍തോട്ടം കൃഷിചെയ്യാനും സംരക്ഷിക്കാനും ദൈവമായ കര്‍ത്താവ് മനുഷ്യനെ അവിടെയാക്കി.
16 : അവിടുന്ന് അവനോടു കല്‍പിച്ചു: തോട്ടത്തിലെ എല്ലാ വൃക്ഷങ്ങളുടെയും ഫലം ഭക്ഷിച്ചുകൊള്ളുക.
17 : എന്നാല്‍, നന്‍മതിന്‍മകളെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള അറിവിന്റെ വൃക്ഷത്തിലെ ഫലം നീ തിന്നരുത്; തിന്നുന്ന ദിവസം നീ മരിക്കും.
18 : ദൈവമായ കര്‍ത്താവ് അരുളിച്ചെയ്തു: മനുഷ്യന്‍ ഏകനായിരിക്കുന്നതു നന്നല്ല; അവനു ചേര്‍ന്ന ഇണയെ ഞാന്‍ നല്‍കും.
19 : ദൈവമായ കര്‍ത്താവ് ഭൂമിയിലെ സകല മൃഗങ്ങളെയും ആകാശത്തിലെ സകല പക്ഷികളെയും മണ്ണില്‍നിന്നു രൂപപ്പെടുത്തി. അവയ്ക്കു മനുഷ്യന്‍ എന്തു പേരിടുമെന്ന് അറിയാന്‍ അവിടുന്ന് അവയെ അവന്റെ മുമ്പില്‍ കൊണ്ടുവന്നു. മനുഷ്യന്‍ വിളിച്ചത് അവയ്ക്കു പേരായിത്തീര്‍ന്നു.
20 : എല്ലാ കന്നുകാലികള്‍ക്കും ആകാശത്തിലെ പറവകള്‍ക്കും വയലിലെ മൃഗങ്ങള്‍ക്കും അവന് പേരിട്ടു. എന്നാല്‍, തനിക്കിണങ്ങിയ തുണയെ കണ്ടില്ല.
21 : അതുകൊണ്ട്, ദൈവമായ കര്‍ത്താവ് മനുഷ്യനെ ഗാഢനിദ്രയിലാഴ്ത്തി, ഉറങ്ങിക്കിടന്ന അവന്റെ വാരിയെല്ലുകളില്‍ ഒന്ന് എടുത്തതിനുശേഷം അവിടം മാംസംകൊണ്ടു മൂടി.
22 : മനുഷ്യനില്‍നിന്ന് എടുത്ത വാരിയെല്ലുകൊണ്ട് അവിടുന്ന് ഒരു സ്ത്രീക്കു രൂപംകൊടുത്തു. അവളെ അവന്റെ മുമ്പില്‍കൊണ്ടുവന്നു.
23 : അപ്പോള്‍ അവന് പറഞ്ഞു: ഒടുവില്‍ ഇതാ എന്റെ അസ്ഥിയില്‍നിന്നുള്ള അസ്ഥിയും മാംസത്തില്‍നിന്നുള്ള മാംസവും. നരനില്‍നിന്ന് എടുക്കപ്പെട്ടതുകൊണ്ട് നാരിയെന്ന് ഇവള്‍ വിളിക്കപ്പെടും.
24 : അതിനാല്‍, പുരുഷന്‍മാതാപിതാക്കളെ വിട്ട് ഭാര്യയോടു ചേരും. അവര്‍ ഒറ്റ ശരീരമായിത്തീരും.
25 : പുരുഷനും അവന്റെ ഭാര്യയും നഗ്നരായിരുന്നു. എങ്കിലും അവര്‍ക്കു ലജ്ജ തോന്നിയിരുന്നില്ല.
അദ്ധ്യായം 3
മനുഷ്യന്റെ പതനം
1 : ദൈവമായ കര്‍ത്താവു സൃഷ്ടിച്ച എല്ലാ വന്യജീവികളിലുംവച്ച് കൗശലമേറിയതായിരുന്നു സര്‍പ്പം. അതു സ്ത്രീയോടു ചോദിച്ചു: തോട്ടത്തിലെ ഒരു വൃക്ഷത്തിന്റെയും ഫലം തിന്നരുതെന്നു ദൈവം കല്‍പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടോ?
2 : സ്ത്രീ സര്‍പ്പത്തോടു പറഞ്ഞു: തോട്ടത്തിലെ വൃക്ഷങ്ങളുടെ പഴങ്ങള്‍ ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്കു ഭക്ഷിക്കാം.
3 : എന്നാല്‍, തോട്ടത്തിന്റെ നടുവിലുള്ള മരത്തിന്റെ പഴം ഭക്ഷിക്കുകയോ തൊടുകപോലുമോ അരുത്; ഭക്ഷിച്ചാല്‍ നിങ്ങള്‍ മരിക്കും എന്നു ദൈവം പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്.
4 : സര്‍പ്പം സ്ത്രീയോടു പറഞ്ഞു: നിങ്ങള്‍ മരിക്കുകയില്ല.
5 : അതു തിന്നുന്ന ദിവസം നിങ്ങളുടെ കണ്ണുകള്‍ തുറക്കുമെന്നും, നന്‍മയും തിന്‍മയും അറിഞ്ഞ് നിങ്ങള്‍ ദൈവത്തെപ്പോലെ ആകുമെന്നും ദൈവത്തിനറിയാം.
6 : ആ വൃക്ഷത്തിന്റെ പഴം ആസ്വാദ്യവും, കണ്ണിനു കൗതുകകരവും, അറിവേകാന്‍ കഴിയുമെന്നതിനാല്‍ അഭികാമ്യവും ആണെന്നു കണ്ട് അവള്‍ അതു പറിച്ചുതിന്നു. ഭര്‍ത്താവിനുംകൊടുത്തു; അവനും തിന്നു.
7 : ഉടനെ ഇരുവരുടെയും കണ്ണുകള്‍ തുറന്നു. തങ്ങള്‍ നഗ്‌നരാണെന്ന് അവരറിഞ്ഞു. അത്തിയിലകള്‍ കൂട്ടിത്തുന്നി അവര്‍ അരക്കച്ചയുണ്ടാക്കി.
8 : വെയിലാറിയപ്പോള്‍ ദൈവമായ കര്‍ത്താവു തോട്ടത്തില്‍ ഉലാത്തുന്നതിന്റെ ശബ്ദം അവര്‍ കേട്ടു. പുരുഷനും ഭാര്യയും അവിടുത്തെ മുമ്പില്‍നിന്നു മാറി, തോട്ടത്തിലെ മരങ്ങള്‍ക്കിടയിലൊളിച്ചു.
9 : അവിടുന്നു പുരുഷനെ വിളിച്ചു ചോദിച്ചു: നീ എവിടെയാണ്?
10 : അവന് മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു: തോട്ടത്തില്‍ അവിടുത്തെ ശബ്ദം ഞാന്‍ കേട്ടു. ഞാന്‍ നഗ്നനായതുകൊണ്ടു ഭയന്ന് ഒളിച്ചതാണ്.
11 : അവിടുന്നു ചോദിച്ചു: നീ നഗ്‌നനാണെന്നു നിന്നോടാരു പറഞ്ഞു? തിന്നരുതെന്ന് ഞാന്‍ കല്‍പിച്ചവൃക്ഷത്തിന്റെ പഴം നീ തിന്നോ?
12 : അവന് പറഞ്ഞു: അങ്ങ് എനിക്കു കൂട്ടിനു തന്ന സ്ത്രീ ആ മരത്തിന്റെ പഴം എനിക്കു തന്നു; ഞാന്‍ അതു തിന്നു.
13 : ദൈവമായ കര്‍ത്താവ് സ്ത്രീയോടു ചോദിച്ചു: നീ എന്താണ് ഈ ചെയ്തത്? അവള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു: സര്‍പ്പം എന്നെ വഞ്ചിച്ചു; ഞാന്‍ പഴം തിന്നു.
ശിക്ഷയും വാഗ്ദാനവും
14 : ദൈവമായ കര്‍ത്താവ് സര്‍പ്പത്തോടു പറഞ്ഞു: ഇതുചെയ്തതുകൊണ്ട് നീ എല്ലാ കന്നുകാലികളുടെയും വന്യമൃഗങ്ങളുടെയുമിടയില്‍ ശപിക്കപ്പെട്ടതായിരിക്കും. നീ മണ്ണില്‍ ഇഴഞ്ഞു നടക്കും. ജീവിതകാലം മുഴുവന്‍ നീ പൊടി തിന്നും.
15 : നീയും സ്ത്രീയും തമ്മിലും നിന്റെ സന്തതിയും അവളുടെ സന്തതിയും തമ്മിലും ഞാന്‍ ശത്രുത ഉളവാക്കും. അവന് നിന്റെ തല തകര്‍ക്കും. നീ അവന്റെ കുതികാലില്‍ പരിക്കേല്‍പിക്കും.
16 : അവിടുന്നു സ്ത്രീയോടു പറഞ്ഞു: നിന്റെ ഗര്‍ഭാരിഷ്ടതകള്‍ ഞാന്‍ വര്‍ധിപ്പിക്കും. നീ വേദനയോടെ കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളെ പ്രസവിക്കും. എങ്കിലും, നിനക്കു ഭര്‍ത്താവില്‍ അഭിലാഷമുണ്ടായിരിക്കും. അവന് നിന്നെ ഭരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും.
17 : ആദത്തോട് അവിടുന്നു പറഞ്ഞു: തിന്നരുതെന്നു ഞാന്‍ പറഞ്ഞപഴം സ്ത്രീയുടെ വാക്കു കേട്ടു നീ തിന്നതുകൊണ്ട് നീ മൂലം മണ്ണു ശപിക്കപ്പെട്ടതായിരിക്കും. ആയുഷ്‌കാലം മുഴുവന്‍ കഠിനാധ്വാനംകൊണ്ട് നീ അതില്‍നിന്നു കാലയാപനം ചെയ്യും.
18 : അതു മുള്ളും മുള്‍ച്ചെടികളും നിനക്കായി മുളപ്പിക്കും. വയലിലെ സസ്യങ്ങള്‍ നീ ഭക്ഷിക്കും.
19 : മണ്ണില്‍നിന്ന് എടുക്കപ്പെട്ട നീ, മണ്ണിനോടു ചേരുന്നതുവരെ, നെറ്റിയിലെ വിയര്‍പ്പുകൊണ്ടു ഭക്ഷണം സമ്പാദിക്കും. നീ പൊടിയാണ്, പൊടിയിലേക്കുതന്നെ നീ മടങ്ങും.
20 : ആദം ഭാര്യയെ ഹവ്വാ എന്നു വിളിച്ചു. കാരണം, അവള്‍ ജീവനുള്ളവരുടെയെല്ലാം മാതാവാണ്.
21 : ദൈവമായ കര്‍ത്താവ് തോലുകൊണ്ട് ഉടയാടയുണ്ടാക്കി ആദത്തെയും അവന്റെ ഭാര്യയെയും ധരിപ്പിച്ചു.
22 : അനന്തരം അവിടുന്നു പറഞ്ഞു: മനുഷ്യനിതാ നന്‍മയും തിന്‍മയും അറിഞ്ഞു നമ്മിലൊരുവനെപ്പോലെയായിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇനി അവന് കൈനീട്ടി ജീവന്റെ വൃക്ഷത്തില്‍നിന്നുകൂടി പറിച്ചു തിന്ന് അമര്‍ത്യനാകാന്‍ ഇടയാകരുത്.
23 : കര്‍ത്താവ് അവരെ ഏദന്‍ തോട്ടത്തില്‍നിന്നു പുറത്താക്കി; മണ്ണില്‍നിന്നെടുത്ത മനുഷ്യനെ മണ്ണിനോടു മല്ലിടാന്‍ വിട്ടു.
24 : മനുഷ്യനെ പുറത്താക്കിയശേഷം ജീവന്റെ വൃക്ഷത്തിങ്കലേക്കുള്ള വഴി കാക്കാന്‍ ഏദന്‍തോട്ടത്തിനു കിഴക്ക് അവിടുന്നു കെരൂബുകളെ കാവല്‍ നിര്‍ത്തി; എല്ലാ വശത്തേക്കും കറങ്ങുന്നതും തീ ജ്വലിക്കുന്നതുമായ ഒരു വാളും അവിടുന്നു സ്ഥാപിച്ചു.
അദ്ധ്യായം 4
കായേനും ആബേലും
1 : ആദം തന്റെ ഭാര്യയായ ഹവ്വായോടുചേര്‍ന്നു. അവള്‍ ഗര്‍ഭംധരിച്ചു കായേനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു. അവള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു: കര്‍ത്താവു കടാക്ഷിച്ച് എനിക്കു പുത്രനെ ലഭിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
2 : പിന്നീട് അവള്‍ കായേന്റെ സഹോദരന്‍ ആബേലിനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു. ആബേല്‍ ആട്ടിടയനും കായേന്‍ കൃഷിക്കാരനുമായിരുന്നു.
3 : ഒരിക്കല്‍ കായേന്‍ തന്റെ വിളവില്‍ ഒരു ഭാഗം കര്‍ത്താവിനു കാഴ്ച സമര്‍പ്പിച്ചു.
4 : ആബേല്‍ തന്റെ ആട്ടിന്‍കൂട്ടത്തിലെ കടിഞ്ഞൂല്‍ക്കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളെയെടുത്ത് അവയുടെ കൊഴുപ്പുള്ള ഭാഗങ്ങള്‍ അവിടുത്തേക്കു കാഴ്ചവച്ചു. ആബേലിലും അവന്റെ കാഴ്ച വസ്തുക്കളിലും അവിടുന്നു പ്രസാദിച്ചു.
5 : എന്നാല്‍ കായേനിലും അവന്റെ കാഴ്ച വസ്തുക്കളിലും അവിടുന്നു പ്രസാദിച്ചില്ല. ഇതു കായേനെ അത്യധികം കോപിപ്പിച്ചു. അവന്റെ മുഖം കറുത്തു.
6 : കര്‍ത്താവു കായേനോടു ചോദിച്ചു: നീ കോപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതെന്തുകൊണ്ട്? നിന്റെ മുഖം വാടിയിരിക്കുന്നതെന്തുകൊണ്ട്?
7 : ഉചിതമായി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചാല്‍ നീയും സ്വീകാര്യനാവുകയില്ലേ? നല്ലതുചെയ്യുന്നില്ലെങ്കില്‍ പാപം വാതില്‍ക്കല്‍ത്തന്നെ പതിയിരിപ്പുണ്ടെന്ന് ഓര്‍ക്കണം. അതു നിന്നില്‍ താത്പര്യം വച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു; നീ അതിനെ കീഴടക്കണം.
8 : ഒരു ദിവസം കായേന്‍ തന്റെ സഹോദരന്‍ ആബേലിനോടു പറഞ്ഞു: നമുക്കു വയലിലേക്കു പോകാം. അവര്‍ വയലിലായിരിക്കേ കായേന്‍ ആബേലിനോടു കയര്‍ത്ത് അവനെകൊന്നു.
9 : കര്‍ത്താവു കായേനോടു ചോദിച്ചു: നിന്റെ സഹോദരന്‍ ആബേല്‍ എവിടെ? അവന് പറഞ്ഞു: എനിക്കറിഞ്ഞുകൂടാ. സഹോദരന്റെ കാവല്‍ക്കാരനാണോ ഞാന്‍?
10 : എന്നാല്‍ കര്‍ത്താവു പറഞ്ഞു: നീയെന്താണു ചെയ്തത്? നിന്റെ സഹോദരന്റെ രക്തം മണ്ണില്‍നിന്ന് എന്നെ വിളിച്ചു കരയുന്നു.
11 : നിന്റെ കൈയില്‍നിന്നു നിന്റെ സഹോദരന്റെ രക്തം കുടിക്കാന്‍ വായ് പിളര്‍ന്ന ഭൂമിയില്‍ നീ ശപിക്കപ്പെട്ടവനായിരിക്കും.
12 : കൃഷിചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ മണ്ണു നിനക്കു ഫലംതരുകയില്ല. നീ ഭൂമിയില്‍ അലഞ്ഞുതിരിയുന്നവനായിരിക്കും.
13 : കായേന്‍ കര്‍ത്താവിനോടു പറഞ്ഞു: എനിക്കു വഹിക്കാവുന്നതിലും വലുതാണ് ഈ ശിക്ഷ.
14 : ഇന്ന് അവിടുന്ന് എന്നെ ഈ സ്ഥലത്തുനിന്ന് ആട്ടിപ്പായിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. അവിടുത്തെ സന്നിധിയില്‍നിന്നു ഞാന്‍ ഒളിച്ചു നടക്കണം. ഞാന്‍ ഭൂമിയില്‍ ഉഴലുന്നവനായിരിക്കും. കാണുന്നവരെല്ലാം എന്നെ കൊല്ലാന്‍ നോക്കും.
15 : കര്‍ത്താവുപറഞ്ഞു: ഒരിക്കലുമില്ല. കായേനെ കൊല്ലുന്നവന്റെ മേല്‍ ഏഴിരട്ടിയായി ഞാന്‍ പ്രതികാരംചെയ്യും. ആരും കായേനെ കൊല്ലാതിരിക്കാന്‍ കര്‍ത്താവ് അവന്റെ മേല്‍ ഒരടയാളം പതിച്ചു.
16 : കായേന്‍ കര്‍ത്താവിന്റെ സന്നിധിവിട്ട് ഏദനു കിഴക്കു നോദുദേശത്ത് വാസമുറപ്പിച്ചു.
കായേന്റെ സന്താനപരമ്പര
17 : കായേന്‍ തന്റെ ഭാര്യയുമായി ചേര്‍ന്നു. അവള്‍ ഗര്‍ഭം ധരിച്ച് ഹെനോക്കിനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു. കായേന്‍ ഒരു നഗരം പണിതു. തന്റെ പുത്രനായ ഹെനോക്കിന്റെ പേര് അതിനു നല്‍കി.

21 : അവന്റെ സഹോദരന്റെ പേര്‌യൂബാല്‍. കിന്നരവുംവേണുവും വായിക്കുന്നവരുടെ പിതാവായിരുന്നു അവന്.

24 : കായേന്റെ പ്രതികാരം ഏഴിരട്ടിയെങ്കില്‍ ലാമെക്കിന്റേത് എഴുപത്തേഴിരട്ടിയായിരിക്കും.
25 : ആദം വീണ്ടും തന്റെ ഭാര്യയോടുചേര്‍ന്നു. അവള്‍ ഒരു പുത്രനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു. സേത്ത് എന്ന് അവനു പേരിട്ടു. കാരണം, കായേന്‍ കൊന്ന ആബേലിനു പകരം എനിക്കു ദൈവം തന്നതാണ് അവന് എന്ന് അവള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു.

10 : കെയ്‌നാന്റെ ജനനത്തിനുശേഷം എനോഷ് എണ്ണൂറ്റിപ്പതിനഞ്ചു വര്‍ഷം ജീവിച്ചു. അവനു വേറേയും പുത്രന്‍മാരും പുത്രിമാരും ഉണ്ടായി.
11 : എനോഷിന്റെ ജീവിതകാലം തൊള്ളായിരത്തിയഞ്ചു വര്‍ഷമാണ്. അവനും മരിച്ചു.
12 : കെയ്നാന് എഴുപതു വയസ്സായപ്പോള്‍ മഹലലേല്‍ എന്നൊരു മകനുണ്ടായി.
13 : മഹലലേലിന്റെ ജനനത്തിനുശേഷം കെയ്നാന് എണ്ണൂറ്റിനാല്‍പതു വര്‍ഷം ജീവിച്ചു. അവനു വേറേയും പുത്രന്‍മാരും പുത്രിമാരും ഉണ്ടായി.
14 : കെയ്‌നാന്റെ ജീവിത കാലം തൊള്ളായിരത്തിപ്പത്തു വര്‍ഷമായിരുന്നു. അവനും മരിച്ചു.
15 : മഹലലേലിന് അറുപത്തഞ്ചു വയസ്സായപ്പോള്‍ യാരെദ് എന്ന മകനുണ്ടായി.
16 : യാരെദിന്റെ ജനനത്തിനുശേഷം മഹലലേല്‍ എണ്ണൂറ്റിമുപ്പതു വര്‍ഷം ജീവിച്ചു. അവനു വേറേയും പുത്രന്‍മാരും പുത്രിമാരും ഉണ്ടായി.
17 : മഹലലേലിന്റെ ജീവിതകാലം എണ്ണൂറ്റിത്തൊണ്ണൂറ്റഞ്ചു വര്‍ഷമായിരുന്നു. അവനും മരിച്ചു.
18 : യാരെദിനു നൂറ്റിയറുപത്തിരണ്ടു വയസ്സായപ്പോള്‍ ഹെനോക്ക് എന്ന പുത്രനുണ്ടായി.
19 : ഹെനോക്കിന്റെ ജനനത്തിനുശേഷം യാരെദ് എണ്ണൂറു വര്‍ഷം ജീവിച്ചു. അവനു വേറേയും പുത്രന്‍മാരും പുത്രിമാരും ഉണ്ടായി.
20 : യാരെദിന്റെ ജീവിതകാലം തൊള്ളായിരത്തിയറുപത്തിരണ്ടു വര്‍ഷമായിരുന്നു. അവനും മരിച്ചു.

22 : മെത്തുശെലഹിന്റെ ജനനത്തിനുശേഷം ഹെനോക്ക് മുന്നൂറു വര്‍ഷംകൂടി ദൈവത്തിനു പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടവനായി ജീവിച്ചു; അവനു വേറേയും പുത്രന്‍മാരും പുത്രിമാരും ഉണ്ടായി.
23 : ഹെനോക്കിന്റെ ജീവിതകാലം മുന്നൂറ്റിയറുപത്തഞ്ചു വര്‍ഷമായിരുന്നു.
24 : ഹെനോക്ക് ദൈവത്തിനു പ്രിയങ്കരനായി ജീവിച്ചു. പിന്നെ അവനെ കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല; ദൈവം അവനെ എടുത്തു.
25 : നൂറ്റിയെണ്‍പത്തേഴു വയസ്സായപ്പോള്‍ മെത്തുശെലഹ് ലാമെക്കിന്റെ പിതാവായി.
26 : ലാമെക്കിന്റെ ജനനത്തിനുശേഷം മെത്തുശെലഹ് എഴുനൂറ്റിയെണ്‍പത്തിരണ്ടു വര്‍ഷം ജീവിച്ചു. അവനു വേറേയും പുത്രന്‍മാരും പുത്രിമാരും ഉണ്ടായി.
27 : മെത്തുശെലഹിന്റെ ജീവിതകാലം തൊള്ളായിരത്തറുപത്തൊമ്പതു വര്‍ഷമായിരുന്നു. അവനും മരിച്ചു.
28 : ലാമെക്കിനു നൂറ്റിയെണ്‍പത്തിരണ്ടു വയസ്സായപ്പോള്‍ ഒരു പുത്രനുണ്ടായി.
29 : കര്‍ത്താവു ശപിച്ച ഈ ഭൂമിയിലെ ക്ലേശകരമായ അധ്വാനത്തില്‍ അവന് നമുക്ക് ആശ്വാസംനേടിത്തരും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞ് അവനെ നോഹ എന്നു വിളിച്ചു.
30 : നോഹയുടെ ജനനത്തിനുശേഷം ലാമെക്ക് അഞ്ഞൂറ്റിത്തൊണ്ണൂറ്റഞ്ചു വര്‍ഷം ജീവിച്ചു. അവനു വേറെയും പുത്രന്‍മാരും പുത്രിമാരും ഉണ്ടായി.
31 : ലാമെക്കിന്റെ ജീവിതകാലം എഴുനൂറ്റിയെഴുപത്തേഴു വര്‍ഷമായിരുന്നു. അവനും മരിച്ചു.
32 : നോഹയ്ക്ക് അഞ്ഞൂറു വയസ്സായതിനുശേഷം ഷേം, ഹാം, യാഫെത്ത് എന്നീ പുത്രന്‍മാരുണ്ടായി.

1 : ജനതകള്‍ ഇളകിമറിയുന്നതെന്തിന്? ജനങ്ങള്‍ എന്തിനു വ്യര്‍ഥമായിഗൂഢാലോചന നടത്തുന്നു?
2 : കര്‍ത്താവിനും അവിടുത്തെ അഭിഷിക്തനും എതിരേ ഭൂമിയിലെ രാജാക്കന്‍മാര്‍ അണിനിരക്കുന്നു; ഭരണാധിപന്‍മാര്‍ കൂടിയാലോചിക്കുന്നു.
3 : അവര്‍ വച്ചവിലങ്ങുകള്‍ തകര്‍ക്കാം; അവരുടെ ചങ്ങലപൊട്ടിച്ചു മോചനം നേടാം.
4 : സ്വര്‍ഗത്തിലിരിക്കുന്നവന്‍ അതു കേട്ടു ചിരിക്കുന്നു; കര്‍ത്താവ് അവരെ പരിഹസിക്കുന്നു.
5 : അവിടുന്ന് അവരോടു കോപത്തോടെ സംസാരിക്കും; ക്രോധത്തോടെ അവരെ സംഭീതരാക്കും.
6 : എന്റെ വിശുദ്ധ പര്‍വതമായ സീയോനില്‍ ഞാനാണ് എന്റെ രാജാവിനെ വാഴിച്ചതെന്ന് അവിടുന്ന് അരുളിച്ചെയ്യും.
7 : കര്‍ത്താവിന്റെ കല്‍പന ഞാന്‍ വിളംബരം ചെയ്യും; അവിടുന്ന് എന്നോട് അരുളിച്ചെയ്തു: നീ എന്റെ പുത്രനാണ്; ഇന്നു ഞാന്‍ നിനക്കു ജന്‍മം നല്‍കി.
8 : എന്നോടു ചോദിച്ചുകൊള്ളുക, ഞാന്‍ നിനക്കു ജനതകളെ അവകാശമായിത്തരും; ഭൂമിയുടെ അതിരുകള്‍ നിനക്ക് അധീനമാകും.
9 : ഇരുമ്പുദണ്ഡുകൊണ്ടു നീ അവരെ തകര്‍ക്കും, മണ്‍പാത്രത്തെയെന്നപോലെ നീ അവരെ അടിച്ചുടയ്ക്കും.

4 : ഉച്ചത്തില്‍ ഞാന്‍ കര്‍ത്താവിനെ വിളിച്ചപേക്ഷിക്കുന്നു; തന്റെ വിശുദ്ധപര്‍വതത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് അവിടുന്ന് എനിക്ക് ഉത്തരമരുളുന്നു.
5 : ഞാന്‍ ശാന്തമായി കിടന്നുറങ്ങുന്നു, ഉണര്‍ന്നെഴുന്നേല്‍ക്കുന്നു; എന്തെന്നാല്‍ , ഞാന്‍ കര്‍ത്താവിന്റെ കരങ്ങളിലാണ്.
6 : എനിക്കെതിരേ പാളയമടിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന പതിനായിരങ്ങളെ ഞാന്‍ ഭയപ്പെടുകയില്ല.
7 : കര്‍ത്താവേ, എഴുന്നേല്‍ക്കണമേ! എന്റെ ദൈവമേ, എന്നെ രക്ഷിക്കണമേ! അങ്ങ് എന്റെ ശത്രുക്കളുടെ ചെകിട്ടത്തടിച്ചു; ദുഷ്ടരുടെ പല്ലുകളെ അങ്ങു തകര്‍ത്തു.
8 : വിമോചനം കര്‍ത്താവില്‍ നിന്നാണ്; അവിടുത്തെ അനുഗ്രഹം അങ്ങയുടെ ജനത്തിന്‍മേല്‍ ഉണ്ടാകുമാറാകട്ടെ!

1 : അബ്രാഹത്തിന്റെ പുത്രനായ ദാവീദിന്റെ പുത്രന്‍ യേശുക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ വംശാവലി ഗ്രന്ഥം.
2 : അബ്രാഹം ഇസഹാക്കിന്റെ പിതാവായിരുന്നു. ഇസഹാക്ക് യാക്കോബിന്റെയും യാക്കോബ് യൂദായുടെയും സഹോദരന്‍മാരുടെയും പിതാവായിരുന്നു.
3 : താമാറില്‍ നിന്നു ജനിച്ച പേരെസിന്റെയും സേറായുടെയും പിതാവായിരുന്നു യൂദാ. പേരെസ്‌ഹെസ്‌റോന്റെയും ഹെസ്‌റോന്‍ ആരാമിന്റെയും പിതാവായിരുന്നു.
4 : ആരാം അമിനാദാബിന്റെയും അമിനാദാബ് നഹ്‌ഷോന്റെയും നഹ്‌ഷോന്‍ സല്‍മോന്റെയും പിതാവായിരുന്നു.
5 : സല്‍മോന്‍ റാഹാബില്‍ നിന്നു ജനിച്ച ബോവാസിന്റെയും
6 : ബോവാസ് റൂത്തില്‍നിന്നു ജനിച്ച ഓബദിന്റെയും ഓബദ് ജസ്‌സെയുടെയും ജസ്‌സെ ദാവീദ് രാജാവിന്റെയും പിതാവായിരുന്നു. ദാവീദ് ഊറിയായുടെ ഭാര്യയില്‍നിന്നു ജനിച്ച സോളമന്റെ പിതാവായിരുന്നു.
7 : സോളമന്‍ റഹോബോവാമിന്റെയും റഹോബോവാം അബിയായുടെയും അബിയാ ആസായുടെയും പിതാവായിരുന്നു.
8 : ആസാ യോസഫാത്തിന്റെയും യോസഫാത്ത് യോറാമിന്റെയും യോറാം ഓസിയായുടെയും
9 : ഓസിയാ യോഥാമിന്റെയും യോഥാം ആഹാസിന്റെയും ആഹാസ് ഹെസെക്കിയായുടെയും ഹെസെക്കിയാ മനാസ്‌സെയുടെയും

12 : യാക്കോണിയാ ബാബിലോണ്‍ പ്രവാസത്തിനുശേഷം ജനിച്ച സലാത്തിയേലിന്റെയും സലാത്തിയേല്‍ സൊറൊബാബേലിന്റെയും പിതാവായിരുന്നു.
13 : സൊറൊബാബേല്‍ അബിയൂദിന്റെയും അബിയൂദ് എലിയാക്കിമിന്റെയും
14 : എലിയാക്കിം ആസോറിന്റെയും ആസോര്‍ സാദോക്കിന്റെയും സാദോക്ക് അക്കീമിന്റെയും
15 : അക്കീം എലിയൂദിന്റെയും എലിയൂദ് എലെയാസറിന്റെയും എലെയാസര്‍ മഥാന്റെയും മഥാന്‍ യാക്കോബിന്റെയും പിതാവായിരുന്നു.
16 : യാക്കോബ് മറിയത്തിന്റെ ഭര്‍ത്താവായ ജോസഫിന്റെ പിതാവായിരുന്നു. അവളില്‍ നിന്നു ക്രിസ്തു എന്നു വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന യേശു ജനിച്ചു.
17 : ഇങ്ങനെ, അബ്രാഹം മുതല്‍ ദാവീദുവരെ പതിന്നാലും ദാവീദുമുതല്‍ ബാബിലോണ്‍ പ്രവാസംവരെ പതിന്നാലും ബാബിലോണ്‍ പ്രവാസം മുതല്‍ ക്രിസ്തുവരെ പതിന്നാലും തലമുറകളാണ് ആകെയുള്ളത്.
യേശുവിന്റെ ജനനം (ലൂക്കാ 2: 12 : 7 )
18 : യേശുക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ ജനനം ഇപ്രകാരമായിരുന്നു: അവന്റെ മാതാവായ മറിയവും ജോസഫും തമ്മിലുള്ള വിവാഹ നിശ്ചയം കഴിഞ്ഞിരിക്കെ, അവര്‍ സഹവസിക്കുന്നതിനുമുമ്പ് അവള്‍ പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവിനാല്‍ ഗര്‍ഭിണിയായി കാണപ്പെട്ടു.
19 : അവളുടെ ഭര്‍ത്താവായ ജോസഫ് നീതിമാനാകയാലും അവളെ അപമാനിതയാക്കാന്‍ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടായ്കയാലും അവളെ രഹസ്യമായി ഉപേക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചു.
20 : അവന് ഇതേക്കുറിച്ച് ആലോചിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കെ, കര്‍ത്താവിന്റെ ദൂതന്‍ സ്വപ്നത്തില്‍ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ട് അവനോടു പറഞ്ഞു: ദാവീദിന്റെ പുത്രനായ ജോസഫ്, മറിയത്തെ ഭാര്യയായി സ്വീകരിക്കാന്‍ ശങ്കിക്കേണ്ടാ. അവള്‍ ഗര്‍ഭംധരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവില്‍നിന്നാണ്.
21 : അവള്‍ ഒരു പുത്രനെ പ്രസവിക്കും. നീ അവന് യേശു എന്നുപേരിടണം. എന്തെന്നാല്‍, അവന് തന്റെ ജനത്തെ അവരുടെ പാപങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നു മോചിപ്പിക്കും.
22 : കന്യക ഗര്‍ഭംധരിച്ച് ഒരു പുത്രനെ പ്രസവിക്കും.
23 : ദൈവം നമ്മോടുകൂടെ എന്നര്‍ഥമുള്ള എമ്മാനുവേല്‍ എന്ന് അവന് വിളിക്കപ്പെടും എന്നു കര്‍ത്താവ് പ്രവാചകന്‍മുഖേന അരുളിച്ചെയ്തതു പൂര്‍ത്തിയാകാന്‍വേണ്ടിയാണ് ഇതെല്ലാം സംഭവിച്ചത്.
24 : ജോസഫ് നിദ്രയില്‍നിന്ന് ഉണര്‍ന്ന്, കര്‍ത്താവിന്റെ ദൂതന്‍ കല്‍പിച്ചതുപോലെപ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചു; അവന് തന്റെ ഭാര്യയെ സ്വീകരിച്ചു.
25 : പുത്രനെ പ്രസവിക്കുന്നതുവരെ അവളെ അവന് അറിഞ്ഞില്ല; അവന് ശിശുവിന് യേശു എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

അദ്ധ്യായം 2
ജ്ഞാനികളുടെ സന്ദര്‍ശനം
1 : ഹേറോദേസ് രാജാവിന്റെ കാലത്ത്‌യൂദയായിലെ ബേത്‌ലെഹെമില്‍ യേശു ജനിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ പൗരസ്ത്യദേശത്തുനിന്നു ജ്ഞാനികള്‍ ജറുസലെമിലെത്തി.
2 : അവര്‍ അന്വേഷിച്ചു: എവിടെയാണ് യഹൂദന്‍മാരുടെ രാജാവായി ജനിച്ചവന്‍? ഞങ്ങള്‍ കിഴക്ക് അവന്റെ നക്ഷത്രം കണ്ട് അവനെ ആരാധിക്കാന്‍ വന്നിരിക്കുകയാണ്.
3 : ഇതുകേട്ട് ഹേറോദേസ് രാജാവ് അസ്വസ്ഥനായി; അവനോടൊപ്പം ജറുസലെം മുഴുവനും.
4 : അവന് പ്രധാനപുരോഹിതന്‍മാരെയും ജനത്തിന്റെ യിടയിലെ നിയമജ്ഞരെയും വിളിച്ചുകൂട്ടി, ക്രിസ്തു എവിടെയാണ് ജനിക്കുന്നതെന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.
5 : അവര്‍ പറഞ്ഞു:യൂദയായിലെ ബേത്‌ലെഹെമില്‍. പ്രവാചകന്‍ എഴുതിയിരിക്കുന്നു:
6 : യൂദയായിലെ ബേത്‌ലെഹെമേ, നീയൂദയായിലെ പ്രമുഖ നഗരങ്ങളില്‍ ഒട്ടും താഴെയല്ല; എന്റെ ജനമായ ഇസ്രായേലിനെ നയിക്കാനുള്ളവന്‍ നിന്നില്‍ നിന്നാണ് ഉദ്ഭവിക്കുക.
7 : അപ്പോള്‍ ഹേറോദേസ് ആജ്ഞാനികളെ രഹസ്യമായി വിളിച്ച്, നക്ഷത്രം പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടതെപ്പോഴെന്നു സൂക്ഷ്മമായി ആകാംക്ഷയോടെ അന്വേഷിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു.
8 : അവന് അവരെ ബേത്‌ലെഹെമിലേക്ക് അയച്ചുകൊണ്ടു പറഞ്ഞു: പോയി ശിശുവിനെപ്പറ്റി സൂക്ഷ്മമായി അന്വേഷിക്കുക; അവനെ കണ്ടുകഴിയുമ്പോള്‍ ഞാനും ചെന്ന് ആരാധിക്കേണ്ടതിന് എന്നെയും അറിയിക്കുക.
9 : രാജാവു പറഞ്ഞതുകേട്ടിട്ട് അവര്‍ പുറപ്പെട്ടു. കിഴക്കുകണ്ട നക്ഷത്രം അവര്‍ക്കുമുമ്പേ നീങ്ങിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. അതു ശിശു കിടക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലത്തിനു മുകളില്‍ വന്നുനിന്നു.
10 : നക്ഷത്രം കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ അവര്‍ അത്യധികം സന്തോഷിച്ചു.
11 : അവര്‍ ഭവനത്തില്‍ പ്രവേശിച്ച് ശിശുവിനെ അമ്മയായ മറിയത്തോടുകൂടി കാണുകയും അവനെ കുമ്പിട്ട് ആരാധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. നിക്‌ഷേപപാത്രങ്ങള്‍ തുറന്ന് പൊന്നും കുന്തുരുക്കവും മീറയും കാഴ്ചയര്‍പ്പിച്ചു.
12 : ഹേറോദേസിന്റെ അടുത്തേക്കു മടങ്ങിപ്പോകരുതെന്ന് സ്വപ്നത്തില്‍ മുന്നറിയിപ്പു ലഭിച്ചതനുസരിച്ച് അവര്‍ മറ്റൊരു വഴിയേ സ്വദേശത്തേക്കു പോയി.
ഈജിപ്തിലേക്കുള്ള പലായനം
13 : അവര്‍ പൊയ്ക്കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ കര്‍ത്താവിന്റെ ദൂതന്‍ സ്വപ്നത്തില്‍ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു ജോസഫിനോടു പറഞ്ഞു: എഴുന്നേറ്റ് ശിശുവിനെയും അമ്മയെയും കൂട്ടി ഈജിപ്തിലേക്കു പലായനം ചെയ്യുക. ഞാന്‍ പറയുന്നതുവരെ അവിടെ താമസിക്കുക. ഹേറോദേസ് ശിശുവിനെ വധിക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ടി ഉടനെ അന്വേഷണം തുടങ്ങും.
14 : അവന് ഉണര്‍ന്ന്, ശിശുവിനെയും അമ്മയെയും കൂട്ടി, ആ രാത്രിതന്നെ ഈജിപ്തിലേക്കുപോയി;
15 : ഹേറോദേസിന്റെ മരണംവരെ അവിടെ വസിച്ചു. ഈജിപ്തില്‍നിന്നു ഞാന്‍ എന്റെ പുത്രനെ വിളിച്ചു എന്നു പ്രവാചകനിലൂടെ കര്‍ത്താവ് അരുളിച്ചെയ്തതു പൂര്‍ത്തിയാകാനാണ് ഇതു സംഭവിച്ചത്.
16 : ജ്ഞാനികള്‍ തന്നെ കബളിപ്പിച്ചെന്നു മനസ്‌സിലാക്കിയ ഹേറോദേസ് രോഷാകുലനായി. അവരില്‍നിന്നു മനസ്‌സിലാക്കിയ സമയമനുസരിച്ച് അവന് ബേത്‌ലെഹെമിലെയും സമീപപ്രദേശങ്ങളിലെയും രണ്ടും അതില്‍ താഴെയും വയസ്‌സുള്ള എല്ലാ ആണ്‍കുട്ടികളെയും ആളയച്ചു വധിച്ചു.
17 : ഇങ്ങനെ, ജറെമിയാപ്രവാചകന്‍ വഴി അരുളിച്ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടതു പൂര്‍ത്തിയായി:
18 : റാമായില്‍ ഒരുസ്വരം, വലിയ കരച്ചിലും മുറവിളിയും. റാഹേല്‍ സന്താനങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചു കരയുന്നു. അവളെ സാന്ത്വനപ്പെടുത്തുക അസാധ്യം. എന്തെന്നാല്‍, അവള്‍ക്കു സന്താനങ്ങള്‍ നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.
തിരിച്ചുവരവ്
19 : ഹേറോദേസിന്റെ മരണത്തിനുശേഷം ഈജിപ്തില്‍വച്ചു കര്‍ത്താവിന്റെ ദൂതന്‍ ജോസഫിനു സ്വപ്നത്തില്‍ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു പറഞ്ഞു:
20 : എഴുന്നേറ്റ് ശിശുവിനെയും അമ്മയെയും കൂട്ടി, ഇസ്രായേല്‍ദേശത്തേക്കു മടങ്ങുക; ശിശുവിനെ വധിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചവര്‍ മരിച്ചുകഴിഞ്ഞു.
21 : അവന് എഴുന്നേറ്റ്, ശിശുവിനെയും അമ്മയെയുംകൂട്ടി, ഇസ്രായേല്‍ ദേശത്തേക്കു പുറപ്പെട്ടു.
22 : മകന്‍ അര്‍ക്കലാവോസാണ് പിതാവായ ഹേറോദേസിന്റെ സ്ഥാനത്ത്‌യൂദയായില്‍ ഭരിക്കുന്നതെന്നു കേട്ടപ്പോള്‍ അവിടേക്കുപോകാന്‍ ജോസഫിനു ഭയമായി. സ്വപ്നത്തില്‍ ലഭിച്ച മുന്നറിയിപ്പനുസരിച്ച് അവന് ഗലീലി പ്രദേശത്തേക്കു പോയി.
23 : അവന് നസറായന്‍ എന്നു വിളിക്കപ്പെടും എന്നു പ്രവാചകന്‍വഴി അരുളിച്ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടതു നിവൃത്തിയാകുവാന്‍, നസ്രത്ത് എന്ന പട്ടണത്തില്‍ അവന് ചെന്നുപാര്‍ത്തു.

God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God named the light Day and the darkness Night.
There was evening and there was morning: the first day.
6 God said, “Let there be a dome in the middle of the waters to separate the waters from each other.” 7 God made the dome and separated the waters under the dome from the waters above the dome. And it happened in that way. 8 God named the dome Sky.
There was evening and there was morning: the second day.
9 God said, “Let the waters under the sky come together into one place so that the dry land can appear.” And that’s what happened. 10 God named the dry land Earth, and he named the gathered waters Seas. God saw how good it was. 11 God said, “Let the earth grow plant life: plants yielding seeds and fruit trees bearing fruit with seeds inside it, each according to its kind throughout the earth.” And that’s what happened. 12 The earth produced plant life: plants yielding seeds, each according to its kind, and trees bearing fruit with seeds inside it, each according to its kind. 14 God said, “Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night. They will mark events, sacred seasons, days, and years. 15 They will be lights in the dome of the sky to shine on the earth.” And that’s what happened. 16 God made the stars and two great lights: the larger light to rule over the day and the smaller light to rule over the night. 17 God put them in the dome of the sky to shine on the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. 20 God said, “Let the waters swarm with living things, and let birds fly above the earth up in the dome of the sky.” 21 God created the great sea animals and all the tiny living things that swarm in the waters, each according to its kind, and all the winged birds, each according to its kind. Genesis 22 The heavens and the earth and all who live in them were completed. 2 On the sixth [c] day God completed all the work that he had done, and on the seventh day God rested from all the work that he had done. 3 God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all the work of creation.[d] 4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created.
World’s creation in the gardenOn the day the Lord God made earth and sky— 5 before any wild plants appeared on the earth, and before any field crops grew, because the Lord God hadn’t yet sent rain on the earth and there was still no human being[e] to farm the fertile land, 6 though a stream rose from the earth and watered all of the fertile land— 7 the Lord God formed the human[f] from the topsoil of the fertile land[g] and blew life’s breath into his nostrils. The human came to life. 8 The Lord God planted a garden in Eden in the east and put there the human he had formed. 9 In the fertile land, the Lord God grew every beautiful tree with edible fruit, and also he grew the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 A river flows from Eden to water the garden, and from there it divides into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first river is the Pishon. It flows around the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 That land’s gold is pure, and the land also has sweet-smelling resins and gemstones. [h] 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon. It flows around the entire land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris, flowing east of Assyria; and the name of the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15 The Lord God took the human and settled him in the garden of Eden to farm it and to take care of it. 16 The Lord God commanded the human, “Eat your fill from all of the garden’s trees; 17 but don’t eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, because on the day you eat from it, you will die!” 18 Then the Lord God said, “It’s not good that the human is alone. I will make him a helper that is perfect for him.” 19 So the Lord God formed from the fertile land all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky and brought them to the human to see what he would name them. The human gave each living being its name. 20 The human named all the livestock, all the birds in the sky, and all the wild animals. But a helper perfect for him was nowhere to be found.
21 So the Lord God put the human into a deep and heavy sleep, and took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh over it. 22 With the rib taken from the human, the Lord God fashioned a woman and brought her to the human being. 23 The human[i] said,
“This one finally is bone from my bones and flesh from my flesh.She will be called a woman[j] because from a man[k] she was taken.”
24 This is the reason that a man leaves his father and mother and embraces his wife, and they become one flesh. 25 The two of them were naked, the man and his wife, but they weren’t embarrassed.
Knowledge, not eternal life
Genesis 3The snake was the most intelligent[l] of all the wild animals that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say that you shouldn’t eat from any tree in the garden?”
2 The woman said to the snake, “We may eat the fruit of the garden’s trees 3 but not the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden. God said, ‘Don’t eat from it, and don’t touch it, or you will die.’”
4 The snake said to the woman, “You won’t die! 5 God knows that on the day you eat from it, you will see clearly and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 The woman saw that the tree was beautiful with delicious food and that the tree would provide wisdom, so she took some of its fruit and ate it, and also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then they both saw clearly and knew that they were naked. So they sewed fig leaves together and made garments for themselves.
8 During that day’s cool evening breeze, they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden; and the man and his wife hid themselves from the Lord God in the middle of the garden’s trees. 9 The Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”
10 The man[m] replied, “I heard your sound in the garden; I was afraid because I was naked, and I hid myself.”
11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat from the tree, which I commanded you not to eat?”
12 The man said, “The woman you gave me, she gave me some fruit[n] from the tree, and I ate.”
13 The Lord God said to the woman, “What have you done?!”
And the woman said, “The snake tricked me, and I ate.”
14 The Lord God said to the snake,
“Because you did this, you are the one cursed out of all the farm animals, out of all the wild animals. On your belly you will crawl, and dust you will eat every day of your life.
15 I will put contempt
between you and the woman, between your offspring and hers.They will strike your head, but you will strike at their heels.”
16 To the woman he said,
“I will make your pregnancy very painful; in pain you will bear children.You will desire your husband, but he will rule over you.”
17 To the man he said, “Because you listened to your wife’s voice and you ate from the tree that I commanded, ‘Don’t eat from it,’
cursed is the fertile land because of you; in pain you will eat from it every day of your life.18 Weeds and thistles will grow for you, even as you eat the field’s plants;19 by the sweat of your face you will eat bread— until you return to the fertile land, since from it you were taken; you are soil, to the soil you will return.”
20 The man named his wife Eve[o] because she is the mother of everyone who lives. 21 The Lord God made the man and his wife leather clothes and dressed them. 22 The Lord God said, “The human being[p] has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil.” Now, so he doesn’t stretch out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat and live forever, 23 the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to farm the fertile land from which he was taken. 24 He drove out the human. To the east of the garden of Eden, he stationed winged creatures wielding flaming swords to guard the way to the tree of life.
Cain and Abel
Genesis 4The man Adam knew his wife Eve intimately. She became pregnant and gave birth to Cain, and said, “I have given life to[q] a man with the Lord’s help.” 2 She gave birth a second time to Cain’s brother Abel. Abel cared for the flocks, and Cain farmed the fertile land.
3 Some time later, Cain presented an offering to the Lord from the land’s crops 4 while Abel presented his flock’s oldest offspring with their fat. The Lord looked favorably on Abel and his sacrifice 5 but didn’t look favorably on Cain and his sacrifice. Cain became very angry and looked resentful. 6 The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why do you look so resentful? 7 If you do the right thing, won’t you be accepted? But if you don’t do the right thing, sin will be waiting at the door ready to strike! It will entice you, but you must rule over it.”
8 Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”[r] When they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
9 The Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”
Cain said, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s guardian?”
10 The Lord said, “What did you do? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground. 11 You are now cursed from the ground that opened its mouth to take your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you farm the fertile land, it will no longer grow anything for you, and you will become a roving nomad on the earth.”
13 Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. 14 Now that you’ve driven me away from the fertile land and I am hidden from your presence, I’m about to become a roving nomad on the earth, and anyone who finds me will kill me.”
15 The Lord said to him, “It won’t happen;[s] anyone who kills Cain will be paid back seven times.” The Lord put a sign on Cain so that no one who found him would assault him. 16 Cain left the Lord’s presence, and he settled down in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
Cain’s descendants17 Cain knew his wife intimately. She became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain built a city and named the city after his son Enoch.
18 Irad was born to Enoch. Irad fathered Mehujael, Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech. 19 Lamech took two wives, the first named Adah and the second Zillah. 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the ancestor of those who live in tents and own livestock. 21 His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the ancestor of those who play stringed and wind instruments. 22 Zillah also gave birth to Tubal-cain, the ancestor of[t] blacksmiths and all artisans of bronze and iron. Tubal-cain’s sister was Naamah.
23 Lamech said to his wives,
“Adah and Zillah, listen to my voice; wives of Lamech, pay attention to my words:I killed a man for wounding me, a boy for striking me;24 so Cain will be paid back seven times and Lamech seventy-seven times.”
25 Adam knew his wife intimately again, and she gave birth to a son. She named him Seth[u] “because God has given me another child in place of Abel, whom Cain killed.” 26 Seth also fathered a son and named him Enosh. At that time, people began to worship in the Lord’s name.
Adam’s descendants
Genesis 5This is the record of Adam’s descendants. On the day God created humanity, he made them to resemble God 2 and created them male and female. He blessed them and called them humanity[v] on the day they were created. 3 When Adam was 130 years old, he became the father of a son in his image, resembling him, and named him Seth. 4 After Seth’s birth, Adam lived 800 years; he had other sons and daughters. 5 In all, Adam lived 930 years, and he died.
6 When Seth was 105 years old, he became the father of Enosh. 7 After the birth of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years; and he had other sons and daughters. 8 In all, Seth lived 912 years, and he died.
9 When Enosh was 90 years old, he became the father of Kenan. 10 After Kenan’s birth, Enosh lived 815 years; and he had other sons and daughters. 11 In all, Enosh lived 905 years, and he died.
12 When Kenan was 70 years old, he became the father of Mahalalel. 13 After the birth of Mahalalel, Kenan lived 840 years; and he had other sons and daughters. 14 In all, Kenan lived 910 years, and he died.
15 When Mahalalel was 65 years old, he became the father of Jared. 16 After Jared’s birth, Mahalalel lived 830 years; and he had other sons and daughters. 17 In all, Mahalalel lived 895 years, and he died.
18 When Jared was 162 years old, he became the father of Enoch. 19 After Enoch’s birth, Jared lived 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters. 20 In all, Jared lived 962 years, and he died.
21 When Enoch was 65 years old, he became the father of Methuselah. 22 Enoch walked with God. After Methuselah’s birth, Enoch lived 300 years; and he had other sons and daughters. 23 In all, Enoch lived 365 years. 24 Enoch walked with God and disappeared because God took him.
25 When Methuselah was 187 years old, he became the father of Lamech. 26 After Lamech’s birth, Methuselah lived 782 years; and he had other sons and daughters. 27 In all, Methuselah lived 969 years, and he died.
28 When Lamech was 182 years old, he became the father of a son 29 and named him Noah, saying, “This one will give us relief[w] from our hard work, from the pain in our hands, because of the fertile land that the Lord cursed.” 30 After Noah’s birth, Lamech lived 595 years; and he had other sons and daughters. 31 In all, Lamech lived 777 years, and he died.
32 When Noah was 500 years old, Noah became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Psalms 1–3Psalm 11 The truly happy person doesn’t follow wicked advice, doesn’t stand on the road of sinners, and doesn’t sit with the disrespectful.2 Instead of doing those things, these persons love the Lord’s Instruction, and they recite God’s Instruction day and night!3 They are like a tree replanted by streams of water, which bears fruit at just the right time and whose leaves don’t fade. Whatever they do succeeds.
4 That’s not true for the wicked! They are like dust that the wind blows away.5 And that’s why the wicked will have no standing in the court of justice— neither will sinners in the assembly of the righteous.6 The Lord is intimately acquainted with the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked is destroyed.
Psalm 22 Why do the nations rant? Why do the peoples rave uselessly?2 The earth’s rulers take their stand; the leaders scheme together against the Lord and against his anointed one.3 “Come!” they say. “We will tear off their ropes and throw off their chains!”4 The one who rules in heaven laughs; my Lord makes fun of them.5 But then God speaks to them angrily; then he terrifies them with his fury:6 “I hereby appoint my king on Zion, my holy mountain!”
7 I will announce the Lord’s decision: He said to me, “You are my son, today I have become your father.8 Just ask me, and I will make the nations your possession; the far corners of the earth will be your property.9 You will smash them with an iron rod; you will shatter them like a pottery jar.”
10 So kings, wise up! Be warned, you rulers of the earth!11 Serve the Lord reverently— trembling, 12 kiss his feet[a] or else he will become angry, and your way will be destroyed because his anger ignites in an instant.
But all who take refuge in the Lord are truly happy!
Psalm 3A psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom.3 Lord, I have so many enemies! So many are standing against me.2 So many are talking about me: “Even God won’t help him.” Selah[b]3 But you, Lord, are my shield! You are my glory! You are the one who restores me.4 I cry out loud to the Lord, and he answers me from his holy mountain. Selah5 I lie down, sleep, and wake up because the Lord helps me.6 I won’t be afraid of thousands of people surrounding me on all sides.
7 Stand up, Lord! Save me, my God!In fact, hit all my enemies on the jaw; shatter the teeth of the wicked!8 Rescue comes from the Lord! May your blessing be on your people! Selah

Birth of Jesus18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ took place. When Mary his mother was engaged to Joseph, before they were married, she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph her husband was a righteous man. Because he didn’t want to humiliate her, he decided to call off their engagement quietly. 20 As he was thinking about this, an angel from the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the child she carries was conceived by the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you will call him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” 22 Now all of this took place so that what the Lord had spoken through the prophet would be fulfilled:
23 Look! A virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, And they will call him, Emmanuel.[a]
(Emmanuel means “God with us.”)
24 When Joseph woke up, he did just as an angel from God commanded and took Mary as his wife. 25 But he didn’t have sexual relations with her until she gave birth to a son. Joseph called him Jesus.
Coming of the magi
CHAPTER 2After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in the territory of Judea during the rule of King Herod, magi came from the east to Jerusalem. 2 They asked, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We’ve seen his star in the east, and we’ve come to honor him.”
3 When King Herod heard this, he was troubled, and everyone in Jerusalem was troubled with him. 4 He gathered all the chief priests and the legal experts and asked them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They said, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is what the prophet wrote:
6 You, Bethlehem, land of Judah, by no means are you least among the rulers of Judah, because from you will come one who governs, who will shepherd my people Israel.”[b]
7 Then Herod secretly called for the magi and found out from them the time when the star had first appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search carefully for the child. When you’ve found him, report to me so that I too may go and honor him.” 9 When they heard the king, they went; and look, the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stood over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were filled with joy. 11 They entered the house and saw the child with Mary his mother. Falling to their knees, they honored him. Then they opened their treasure chests and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 Because they were warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back to their own country by another route.
Escape to Egypt13 When the magi had departed, an angel from the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up. Take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod will soon search for the child in order to kill him.” 14 Joseph got up and, during the night, took the child and his mother to Egypt. 15 He stayed there until Herod died. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: I have called my son out of Egypt.[c]
Murder of the Bethlehem children16 When Herod knew the magi had fooled him, he grew very angry. He sent soldiers to kill all the children in Bethlehem and in all the surrounding territory who were two years old and younger, according to the time that he had learned from the magi. 17 This fulfilled the word spoken through Jeremiah the prophet:
18 A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and much grieving. Rachel weeping for her children, and she did not want to be comforted, because they were no more.[d]
Return from Egypt19 After King Herod died, an angel from the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt. 20 “Get up,” the angel said, “and take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel. Those who were trying to kill the child are dead.” 21 Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus ruled over Judea in place of his father Herod, Joseph was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he went to the area of Galilee. 23 He settled in a city called Nazareth so that what was spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled: He will be called a Nazarene.
